Advent, in our Lutheran tradition

Advent, in our Lutheran tradition, is a sacred season of anticipation and preparation that begins four Sundays before Christmas. Its purpose is twofold: to prepare believers to celebrate Christ’s first coming in Bethlehem and to ready their hearts for His promised return. We, as Lutherans, emphasize that Advent is not simply a countdown to Christmas but a time of reflection, repentance, and hope rooted in God’s faithfulness.

The season’s themes—hope, peace, joy, and love—unfold through our Scripture readings, hymns, and liturgical practices that highlight both Christ’s humility in the manger and His future coming in glory. The paraments and candles, often in blue or sometimes purple, symbolize expectation and repentance. Our Advent wreath marks the progression of the season, inviting worshippers to meditate weekly on God’s unfolding promise of salvation.
